    The number of foreign nationals residing in Japan hit a record high of over 3.2 million in 2023, government data showed Friday, as more workers entered to meet demand created by the country’s labor shortage.

    As of the end of June, 3,223,858 foreigners resided in Japan, up 148,645 from the end of December 2022, according to the Immigration Services Agency.

    The latest figures show that Japan's job market in August maintained the same level as the previous month. That was as some employers were reluctant to increase hiring as they struggle with higher costs.

    The labor ministry says there were 129 job openings for every 100 applicants, unchanged from July. The ratio had been falling for three months in a row.

    Tokyo- Higher-paid individuals with specialized skills and low-wage workers in need of additional income to make ends meet tend to take on second jobs more than middle-class workers, a government survey showed.

    Among employees of different income classes, 6.25 percent of those earning 10 million yen or more a year in their main jobs had side jobs in 2022, with the proportion even higher for individuals earning 15 million yen or more, according to the Employment Status Survey by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

    Workers at a major Tokyo department store went on strike on Thursday after talks with management over the planned sale of their company broke down, marking the first major walk-out the country has seen in decades.

    Some 900 workers at the flagship Seibu store in the bustling district of Ikebukuro are protesting the sale of Sogo & Seibu, a unit of retail giant Seven & i, to U.S. fund Fortress Investment Group.

    Aiming to tackle a severe shortage of taxi, bus and truck drivers, Japan is planning to expand the existing visa framework for specified skilled workers in order to attract foreign nationals in the transport and logistics industries.

    With both industries especially struggling to recruit new workers as existing drivers grow older, the manpower situation is expected to continue deteriorating in the coming years.

    Bonuses at major Japanese companies this summer averaged ¥845,557, up 1.59% from a year before and hitting the second-highest level on record, the labor ministry has announced.

    The average was slightly higher than the ¥845,453 in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, and trailed only the ¥870,731 in 2018, the ministry said Friday.
