Leadership Global Conference 2011

The HR Agenda

Original article (untranslated version)

What makes you unique? Personal uniqueness was this year’s theme for the “Leadership Global Conference 2011” held in Tokyo in November. Discovering and developing each employee’s potential is vital for any company to flourish. What makes each person unique is a combination of their inherent nature and the experiences they have acquired. Putting the right person, in the right place, at the right time gives them the chance to gain experience and grow both personally and professionally. Today, encouraging the talent of employees to blossom is not only a task for HR departments. As global corporations face increasingly diverse business situations, being responsive to people development, in the broadest sense, needs to become more of a corporate-wide concern.

For those interested in considering leadership development from such a broad-based perspective, this conference was of considerable interest. The three-day event was the brainchild of coaches certified through the Co-active Leadership Program conducted by the Coaches Training Institute (CTI), the first program to be accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF).

Their past two conferences, held in New York and Barcelona, were only open to CTI coaches. The Tokyo conference, however, was open to all. Organizers integrated inclusiveness seamlessly into the logistics of the event, and welcomed a total of 440 participants from Japan, Europe, and North America. Non-Japanese speakers were provided with simultaneous interpretation throughout. The age of participants ranged from university students to retired professionals. A noticeable number of participants attended with guide dogs, and the venue also posed no problem to wheelchair users. People shared experiences from their work across a wide range of different professions and industries.

Through a combination of plenary sessions and breakout groups, all conference participants were invited to explore their individuality and understand more about the inherent aspects of themselves that made them both different from others and special. The atmosphere changed palpably over the three days as this recognition began to settle.

One of the sub-sessions on the second day, “Demonstrating Leadership in Organizations” facilitated by conference organizer Kyoko Seki, was a conversation with Takayuki Tsujii, General Manager of Patagonia Japan, and Yayoi Masuda, former AsiaPacific Head of Human Resources for Nike, Inc. This was a rare opportunity to hear not just theoretical views on leadership, but significant details of the practical experiences in leadership that made these two top-level executives who they are today
