Sharp, based in Osaka, announced in May plans to shed about 5,000 employees, or 10 percent of its global workforce. As part of the plan, the company invited staffers in Japan to apply for voluntary retirement between July 27 and Aug. 4. The applicants will quit Sharp on Sept. 30.
