In Japan, part-time and temporary workers account for nearly 40% of the workforce but have historically been ignored by the country’s trade unions. This spring, 16 unions came together to demand a collective wage increase for nonregular workers.

TOKYO- Japan's immigration authorities on Monday proposed expanding the scope of a blue-collar skilled workers visa that effectively allows holders to stay in the country indefinitely in a possible major shift in its foreign labor policy.

The move comes in response to calls from the business community seeking to secure human resources amid an ongoing labor shortage and will increase the number of sectors that can be upgraded to the Specified Skilled Worker No. 2 status from two to 11.

The results of a survey on labor unions, conducted by the Japanese Trade Union Confederation (Rengō) in late October 2022, shows that working people in Japan do not view labor unions as organizations that can help them. The online survey was based on 2,000 valid responses from individuals aged 15 or older nationwide.

The Japanese government has begun talks on updating a status of residence for skilled foreign workers. The change would let them work in more fields.

Japan currently classifies status for skilled foreign workers in two categories. People who get the lower Category 1 can get jobs in 12 industries. But they can only stay in Japan for up to 5 years.

TOKYO -- Japanese companies will fill 37.6% of job openings with midcareer hires this fiscal year, a Nikkei study shows, the share representing the largest-ever shift away from Japan's traditional lifetime employment model.

Responses collected from 2,308 major companies indicate that 94,430 midcareer candidates will be hired in the year through March 2024.

TOKYO -- A government panel of experts has proposed the abolition of the Technical Intern Training Program for foreign workers, citing a wide gap between its ideal of international contribution and actual practice as a way to alleviate an acute labor shortage. The proposal is expected to prompt the Japanese government to consider a new system to address the shortage through using foreign workers.

Originator, an employment company helping foreign students find jobs in Japan through its information website Ryūkatsu, recently conducted a survey targeting its registered members employed at companies in Japan. Respondents were asked about the merits of working in Japan, with multiple responses possible, and the majority, at 54.0%, answered “steady employment.” This was more than double the response for the second most mentioned benefit of being “able to do the work you want” at 25.8%. With the outlook for the global economy still uncertain, it seems that long-term employment, prevalent among Japanese companies, holds appeal for foreign employees.

The Consumer Confidence Index for households of two or more people came to 33.9 in March. That's up 2.6 points from the previous month and the sharpest rise since June 2021.

Japanese workers’ real wages have fallen for the 11th straight month despite a government push for higher pay, highlighting the challenge awaiting incoming Bank of Japan Gov. Kazuo Ueda.

Real cash earnings for Japan’s workers dropped 2.6% from a year earlier in February, matching economists’ forecast, the labor ministry reported Friday. The data is watched closely because many expect stronger pay data to prompt the BOJ, under its new chief, to consider ending its ultraeasy policy.

Japan may face a shortage of more than 11 million workers by 2040, a study has found, underscoring the economic challenges the nation faces as its population ages rapidly.

The working age population is expected to rapidly decline from 2027, according to the study by independent think tank Recruit Works Institute, published Tuesday. The worker supply is expected to shrink by about 12% in 2040 from 2022, even as labor demand remains steady, the report said.
