TEPCO decided to boost hiring of new graduates next year after many young employees left the company. In the three years since the crisis began, 1,550 employees, mainly young people, voluntarily quit.

The potential boost is likely the result of the efforts of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has made increasing the female workforce a major component of his growth strategy compiled in June 2013, the third and final “arrow” in his “Abenomics” economic policy package.

Toyota Motor Corp. plans to hire 1,350 new graduates and midcareer workers in its annual recruitment plan for fiscal 2014, maintaining the same level as this year, which ends March 31, company officials said.
In the survey, conducted last month, 46.4 percent of companies said wages will rise in the year, up from 39.3 percent in the fiscal 2013 survey.
Japan’s employment rate has set a new record with more than 10% of its working population now made up of people aged 65 years and older. This is in stark contrast of its Western counterparts whose employment of those aged 65 years and older is only within 1-5% of its total employed population.
