    According to data from the Japan Student Services Organization, the total number of international students decreased from 279,597 in 2019 to 242,440 in 2020 – a reduction rate of 13.3%. In addition, the employment rate of international students in Japan also declined to 39.9% in 2020 compared to 47.6% in 2019.

    The average annual wage of female private-sector workers in Japan in 2021 exceeded 3 million yen (US$20,720) for the first time ever, according to a recent National Tax Agency survey. However, the gender wage gap remained large, with last year’s average wage for women, at 3.02 million yen (US$20,858), about 45% less than that for men.

    A total of 2,880 small and medium-sized companies took part in the survey conducted by the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, or JCCI, in July and August. Nearly 65 percent said they did not have enough workers. That came close to the record high of 66.4 percent in 2019. The survey started in 2016.

This signals a major transformation of the conventional terms of employment in Japan, as even major firms take a hard look at systems allowing workers to live well outside of commuting distance from their office.
