  • Workplace booster vaccinations kick off in Japan

    All Nippon Airways Co. and Japan Airlines Co. together administered third shots to 242 of their employees at Haneda Airport in Tokyo. ANA and Japan Airlines said they plan to give the booster to 20,000 and 17,000 of their group employees and others, respectively, over the next few months.

  • Japan set to gather foreign worker data for better support

    The number of foreign workers in Japan rose to a record 1.73 million as of last October amid a workforce shortage, labor ministry data showed, but the government currently has only basic information on them, such as their residency status, nationality and workplace size.

  • Why Japan's wages aren't rising

    According to data by the OECD, the average annual wage in Japan increased until 1997 to $38,395, and then flattened out. Wages have maintained that same level ever since. In 2020, the latest data available, the average Japanese worker made $38,515 (equivalent to about ¥4.45 million based on the current exchange rate.)

  • Number of hotel and restaurant workers in Japan fell by 220,000 in 2021

    The number of people employed in the hotel and restaurant sector in Japan plunged by 220,000 to 3.69 million in 2021 from the previous year, the lowest level since comparable data became available in 2002, the internal affairs ministry said Tuesday.

  • Japan's Dec jobless rate falls as monthly employment gain hits near 36-year high

  • Japanese firms ramp up remote work amid omicron fears

  • Yahoo Japan lets staff WFH – and flies hybrid workers into office

    Yahoo Japan will be giving their employees the freedom to work from anywhere in the country starting this April, according to reports, at the same time increasing the commuting budget for every employee per month. In a report from Bloomberg, the 8,000-strong workplace will be getting an increased commuter budget of JPY150,000 per worker, lifting the company' previous daily cap.

  • Japan’s Panasonic Joins Global Trend Toward Four-Day Week

    Panasonic’s move is in line with actions by technology companies worldwide that are trying to attract talent in a tight job market by offering a shorter week. Amazon.com Inc. piloted a four-day week for select employees in 2018, and consumer-goods giant Unilever Plc in December 2020 started a yearlong trial of the shortened week for its New Zealand staff. Countries such as Ireland and Iceland are also trying it out.
