    Dear JHRS Members,

A prestigious German academic is seeking individuals to participate in a research study related to the experience of Japanese women in the workplace in Japan.  If you are a Japanese woman working in a Western MNC or domestic Japanese firm, or you know women who may be interested in participating in this survey, please contact Dr. Markus Pudelko.

    Let's give Markus our support!

Research project on Japanese career women

working for domestic companies or foreign subsidiaries

by Prof. Dr. Markus Pudelko, Tübingen University

    Research objective

This is a research project about the personal perspectives and attitudes of Japanese career women (questions to be asked on motivations, ambitions, possible discrimination, possible change processes, outlook for the future, job and family).

    Research design

This is a qualitative (interview based) in-depth study. It is about the interviewees’ opinions and attitudes, not about any corporate or other facts.

    Anonymity

Under no circumstances would any personal or company names be directly or indirectly revealed. This is a very basic ethical standard our profession as scholars to which we adhere as a matter of course.

    Research output

This is very much a high profile and high impact study which is designed to be published in two journal articles. Target journals are Human Relations and Organizational Studies, two top (A) journals of management studies which are both widely read. So far I have presented preliminary results on this project at the Academy of Management Annual Conference (8000 participants) two weeks ago in San Antonio, Texas; at the Academy of International Business Annual Conference (1000 participants) in Nagoya in June and at several smaller workshops and research seminars in Europe and Asia.

    Author information

I am professor at one of Germany’s leading universities, Tübingen University, which has a history of over 500 years. Previously, I worked for eight years at the University of Edinburgh in the UK. I have spent for research purposes a total of more than one year in Japan and have widely published on Japanese management. Currently, I am based at Doshisha University, but I have also close links to Kyoto University, Kobe University, Waseda University, Sophia University, JAIST and other institutions, where I have presented previous research findings.

For more information on myself (CV, research output etc.) please visit: http://www.ib.uni-tuebingen.de

I am humbly asking you for your assistance by sharing your views on my research topic with me. In my previous interviews I experienced that Japanese career women were actually highly engaged in telling me their ideas about this research topic, as it is very close to their hearts. I am staying in Japan only until mid October, so please contact me as soon as possible if you would be willing to assist me in my research. As a toke of my gratitude, I would be happy to share my research output (publications) with you. My contact e-mail is: markus.pudelko@uni-tuebingen.de. Thank you so much!
