May 1 is synonymous with Labor Day/May Day/International Workers Day in many countries, and is a celebration of some of the rights that union organizers have won for workers. Jill Griffin on Forbes writes that Labor Day began in the late 1800’s due to manufacturing workers’ concern about the long hours they were required to work under extremely difficult, fatiguing, and dangerous conditions. Union organizers strove to accomplish eight-hour workdays and reduced workweeks, and were successful in doing so, which resulted in a win-win situation for the workers, businesses, and the economy.
