As we head into 2023, organizations are facing some significant challenges. The competition for top talent is fierce, workers are feeling burnt out, and we’re all seeing mixed messages about the global economy, inflation, and a potential recession.

Economists predict a strong year for the U.S., with historically low unemployment and over half a million jobs added in January 2023. However, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warns that a third of the global economy will be in recession this year.

Managing an employee’s performance is never simple, but managing an employee through a performance improvement plan (PIP) to disciplinary action is particularly complex. As a first step, an employer will often consider nondisciplinary measures, such as additional training or targeted coaching sessions, when addressing poor performance. However, if performance continues to be lacking, the PIP is a valuable tool that sets a framework for improving an employee’s performance or, alternatively, for disciplinary consequences – up to and including termination.

Succession planning prepares a workforce for inevitable departures, retirements and promotions and provides a process through which an employer can identify and develop internal staff with the potential to fill key leadership and other critical roles. By engaging in succession planning, an employer better ensures business continuity as well as provides advancement opportunities for current employees.

As large numbers of employees leave their current positions in response to opportunities with other organizations resulting from a competitive labor market, leaders require a renewed focus on succession planning to ensure the continued viability and resilience for their organizations.

In a historically tight labor market, your growing enterprise needs every advantage possible to attract and retain top talent. The self-service revolution has redefined the consumer experience, and the modern employee is well acquainted with the convenience and access it provides. Relying on a paper-based or otherwise cumbersome HR system not only frustrates your employees — it pulls the velocity of your business to a crawl. Likewise, the efficiency and accuracy you gain by putting the power of HR data in your employees’ hands is exponential.

Several states have already passed laws that direct employers as to how and when they must disclose pay ranges (or other information) to either job applicants or current employees. The requirements vary by state, with some states requiring more transparency than others, particularly for companies that operate nationwide. Over the last few years, I have had countless conversations with business and people leaders on the topic of skills. In response to the ever-increasing pace of change, more and more organisations are turning towards skill-based approaches to managing talent. The common challenge these organisations are solving for is how to effectively source, deploy, and develop talent in a future-fit way.

While the concept of “skill-based organisations” may be the newest workplace buzzword, few organisations have truly succeeded in adopting this new operating model around work. Shifting to a skillbased approach is a significant transformation for a workforce to undergo.

While it’s clear that this historic pandemic prompted many changes, a number of trends were already in motion, especially in the employment world. 2023 will see many of these trends reach their full effect.

Of particular note is a fundamental restructuring of the employer/employee relationship. For workers, COVID only accelerated their passion—and eventually their collective demand—for their working lives to be placed in a larger context.
